BIO and CV

Personal Experience

 

With a Dutch mother and American father, Alex spent a significant portion of his childhood in the USA and in the Netherlands.  These upbringings lead him to be exposed at a young age to art and design from around the world.

 

Education

 

Just after high school, Alex attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.  He majored in Industrial design and got the chance to explore Transportation, Product and Furniture design.  He graduated with Honors and holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Design.

 

While at Pratt, Alex studied abroad for a summer in Scandinavia and attended Denmark’s Design School in Copenhagen.  He studied furniture there.

 

Several years later, after having worked as a footwear designer Alex went back to school.  He attended the Fashion Institute of Technology (a State University of New York), located in Manhattan, NY.  He Graduated Summa cum Laude and got an Associate of Applied Science degree in Accessories Design.

 

Full time employment

 

For two years Alex worked at Globe Footwear Corp. in Roselle Park, NJ as a Men’s Dress Shoe Designer.  A large part of this position entailed building a line of men’s dress shoes at different price points.  For this position he traveled to Asia to oversee production, observe new factories and shop for materials.  Also for Globe, he acted as an in house Sales Representative by handling walk-in and phone customers.  The sales did not end there; he traveled to Las Vegas for the MAGIC trade show as well as Atlanta and several other domestic cities to do wholesale sales.  When the shipments would come in he would inspect the shoes received in the warehouse.  Among the shoe design and sales he would also design Graphics of sales brochures and logos.

 

Immediately graduating from Pratt, Alex worked for one year for L.J.O, Inc. in Wayne, NJ as an athletic footwear designer.  He designed core athletic footwear and fashion footwear.  He drew new concepts and updated existing patterns.  He also illustrated concepts with hand drawing and using Adobe Photoshop.  He specified details with Excel; including materials, hardware, colors and treatments, researched trends in the athletic footwear markets.  And he designed point of purchase graphics and designed logos for shoe lines.

 

Freelancing

 

Alex worked several times as a consultant at ALEX Toys located in Northvale, NJ.  Among his duties were sewing and constructed prototypes and mocking up packaging prototypes.

 

Alex created a line of Soft Goods Design concepts for Plush Toys for JW Pet Co. in Teterboro, NJ.

 

Immediately after graduating from FIT, Alex worked as a consulting designer for Brown Shoe Company in Manhattan, New York.  Under supervision of the Department Manager, he Developed ladies dress shoes by hand sketching.  He worked on multiple brands including Etienne Aigner, Nickels, and Nickels Soft.

 

While a student at FIT Alex interned at Vaya Bags in Huntington Station, NY.  His duties included sewing and constructing messenger bags and cutting and finishing of materials.

 

While a student at Pratt, Alex interned at Cotule Lighting Design in Brooklyn, NY.  His duties there included fabricating and installing modern shades and fixtures.

 

Teaching

 

Alex tutored students at the ANNEX store (part of The Road Less Traveled store) in Santa Ana, CA.  His workshops were in lamp making, sewing and constructing bags.

 

While at FIT, Alex tutored students in sketching and rendering for the course titled Sketching Accessories.

 

Alex first tried his hand at teaching as an Adjunct Professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.  He taught Product Design in the Continuing Studies Department.
